He was shooting for a zero-dollar build, and although he doesn’t state how close he came, we’re going to guess it was pretty close. ![]() He seemed to be in it for the money, or more precisely from the lack of it. Sadly, surviving the zombie mutant biker uprising seemed not to be the incentive for ’s version of the “Multimachine”. And when you think about it, the ability to cobble together such a machine tool would probably make you pretty handy to have around in an apocalypse. We have to admit that our first thought on seeing a Frankenlathe made from old engine blocks was that it was a set piece from a movie like The Road Warrior. Still, this is a flat piece of metal made from scratch, an a great example of how far you can take home machining in a post-apocalyptic scenario.Ĭontinue reading “Cast Aluminium Becomes A Machine Tool” → Posted in classic hacks, Tool Hacks Tagged cnc, gingery, Shaper There’s a CNC machine involved, and nobody is going to Greenland to make aluminum anymore. Sure, is using modern tools and modern techniques to build this shaper. has built one of these machines before, the metal lathe, and the second in the Gingery series of books after a foundry, and the next book is instructions on how to build a mill. The design of this shaper comes directly from the Gingery series of books, the famous series of books that are step-by-step instructions on how to build a machine shop starting from the technology of rubbing two sticks together. Today, if you want to surface a piece of stock, you would just throw it onto the Bridgeport, but there are still some use cases for a metal shaper. Effectively, it’s kind of like a jigsaw, in that it cuts with a reciprocating action and is able to plane the entire surface of a metal plate. (YouTube, also embedded below.)įirst off, what exactly is a metal shaper? It’s not commonly seen in machine shops these days, but at the turn of the last century, these were popular and practical machines to cut keyways into a piece of stock. For the last few months, has been working on building his own homemade shaper, and now it’s making chips. At the very least, you can make the tool to manufacture anything. With a shaper and a lathe, you can rebuild or manufacture almost anything. ![]() Finally, although these are designed to be used with the traditional cope and drag method, it would be easier to use the lost PLA method of casting, but will require that you add your own sprues, runners and vent holes, for which foam and wire glued to the pattern is recommended.Shaper tools were, at one time, a necessary tool for any machine shop. The pieces can then be stir welded for casting. Additionally, because the parts are so large, certain pieces such as the bed, will require processing in Meshmixer or similar software to be able to fit the print beds of most 3D printers. However, without metal casting and appropriate structural rigidity, it may still be possible to construct a functional lathe from the 3D printed patterns with the appropriate modifications, although the lathe will be limited in its ability to cut certain materials. ![]() Note that these are simply patterns for casting and it is impossible to complete the project without the instructions from the book which may be purchased online through various book purveyors. These patterns are an accompaniment to David Gingery's book "Build Your Own Metal Working Shop From Scrap" (ISBN:978-1-87) and his drawings have been reproduced as faithfully as possible (with minor adjustments) into the 3D objects here. This project requires considerable time and effort and will take you through the basics of machining and metal casting, including the construction of a metal foundry that uses either charcoal or propane. This set of files is the complete set of casting patterns required to make a Dave Gingery Metal Lathe. ![]()
